The Christmas Gospel
Chapter 27
The true genius reveals only love through its knowledge and power
Yes, but are the atomic bomb and all the other scientific phenomena not ingenious? Is it not ingenious that one has been able to discover so much of the structure of matter that one has thus been able to master the forces of nature in such a full manner? Well, it is true that the scientific discoveries and inventions express much intelligence in the purely physical, technical and chemical area, but reveal at the same time that their originators are completely devoid of absolute knowledge as to what to use this mighty ability for. The terrestrial human being has thus developed the ability to juggle with the elements. It can create thunder and lightning. It has become a material giant, but this giant is no genius as long as its results are not a caressing, inspiring and life-giving work of art for the spectators. As long as the giant's manifestations have resulted only in an overall outcome in the form of a partially destroyed, tortured, demoralised, materialistic and vengeful humanity, which starving and freezing now seeks refuge in the ruins of the once so beautiful cultural centres, equipped with food, heat, light and the amenities of life, his work is no real art and is thus totally devoid of genius, yes, is almost to be regarded as an all-prevailing botch-job. Since genius is the culmination of art, nothing whatsoever can be ingenious without being art. Genius is not the ability to create knowledge and power, but exclusively this: being able, with knowledge and power, to reveal the absolute truth, the absolute meaning of life, which in turn is the same as absolute love. When science culminates in bringing humanity into the utmost contact with the meaning of life or love, not on the contrary destroying and mutilating it, it has become real or absolute genius. And this genius is the culmination of the fulfilment of the Christmas Gospel. Then there is a lasting peace on earth, and the radiant halo of good will shines over all its continents and gardens in the form of the absolute kingdom of heaven.
