35.2  The mission of the one-poled state
Why does the living being appear as one-poled? When the being assumes a one-poled form it is due to the fact that without the experience of the one-poled epochs, the creation of its mentality and consciousness would be a total impossibility. The beings' alternating experience of one-poled epochs is the absolute condition for their existence as living beings. Through the one-poled epochs the beings renew or regenerate their cosmic consciousness, a consciousness that they have built up and experienced in their previous spiral cycle. And from the mineral sphere of this spiral cycle's kingdom of bliss these beings now evolve through the present spiral cycle's plant kingdom and animal kingdom, to which the present unfinished human beings more or less belong. From here they now evolve to become finished human beings with a new cosmic consciousness, whereby they appear in God's image after his likeness. What does the one-poled state mean in the beings' primitive animal existence? The one-poled state is a state in the being that automatically creates a longing, a desire for light. The beings feel this desire for light as a vitally necessary hunger that stimulates them to seek its satiation. This stimulus is a reinforcement of the being's primordial desire, and makes the being manifest and create. This hunger, craving or longing in the unfinished human being is known as its attraction to a being of the opposite sex. The masculine being is thus attracted to a feminine being, just as the feminine being is attracted to a masculine being. When these two beings of opposite sexes thus seek one another it is because they can satisfy their sexual hunger only through the act they engage in together, the act we know as copulation. In this hunger and satiation we have the primary structure by virtue of which the beings are led through the animal kingdom to the completely evolved human being's state. But what would happen if the beings were not one-poled, that is, did not appear as male beings and female beings so as to both become dependent upon one another for the satisfaction of their sexual hunger or longing for the climactic feeling of satisfaction or sensual pleasure that they can normally attain only through their act of copulation with one another?
The experience of this great feeling of satisfaction or sensual pleasure is nothing less than the light of God's spirit in a form adapted to physical beings. But since the beings had not yet got cosmic consciousness they could of course perceive this divine experience of theirs only as a purely physical process. Through an organic process this spirit of God thus created an artificial experience of love, which we have already described under the concept of "amorous love". In the normal course of events this amorous love created a mutual sympathy and attraction in the copulatory beings for one another as well as love for their offspring. And this process of copulation was the only light, the only real experience of sympathy or affection in the beings' zone of evolution in the animal kingdom, where all beings were, so to speak, at war with all other beings. The conditions of life here were of course that the beings had to kill in order to live. In the middle of this world of war and death, the manifestation of God's spirit in the form of copulatory love was thus a sanctuary of peace within the sphere of the two copulatory beings and their offspring. This hunger or longing for light in the form of the act of copulation, and thereby for the sympathy or affection of a being of the opposite sex, became the foundation of life, guiding the beings through the animal kingdom, then through the animal culmination or the unfinished human beings' state of devil consciousness, and beyond that to development into the human being in God's image. Here the experience of God's holy spirit came to be a flood of light on quite a different scale than that which the beings could attain through the act of copulation. We will not dwell on this subject more here but merely refer the reader to the third volume of the present work, in which this is described in detail. Here in the explanation of the symbol itself we will give merely a more detailed account of what causes the being to appear alternately as male and female in the spiral cycles.
