33.2  The transformation from animal to human being is not an act of will but of growth
The transformation of man from animal to human being is not an act of will like walking, standing or running, saying yes or no, or deciding when one will eat or drink. This fundamental transformation, on the contrary, is an act of growth or a matter of development like becoming a genius at music, painting or anything else. Being able to love one's neighbour as oneself, and thereby God above all things, is the same as being a moral genius. This ingeniousness can be acquired only through evolution. And it is precisely this evolution towards becoming a moral genius that is taking place in the unfinished human being in the animal kingdom. Becoming a moral genius is the same as becoming a human being whose mode of existence is universal love; such a moral genius therefore manifests itself as a human being in God's image after his likeness.
