20.4  Holy Communion
This divine cosmic principle must not be confused with the "principle of the forgiveness of sins" with which we are familiar from the church's sacrament of "Holy Communion". This divine phenomenon is a mentally soothing means of suggestion against very destructive pangs of conscience. It is thus in itself no means for forgiving sins, but that does not make Holy Communion less holy or divine. The instinctive, religious believer cannot possibly grasp the true analysis of the principle of the forgiveness of sins in the divine world order. He must, therefore, have a symbol of this principle that he can grasp, and thereby have his conscience brought into order or balance. How could such a person otherwise be helped? Believers or instinctive people would not be able to understand the true cosmic process of the forgiveness of sins in any way other than precisely in the form of an idea about "exemption from punishment". It is this idea about having "sinned" that can weigh heavily on the mind of the believer. The point, for the as yet cosmically unintellectual human being, is to have this idea removed from his consciousness so that he can regain his normal mental balance. The only means of removing this being's oppressive feelings of guilt was therefore the holy sacrament. By means of this sacrament, which in reality is merely a symbol of the real cosmic principle of the forgiveness of sins, the being can be inoculated with an idea to counteract its guilt complex whereby it gets the idea that its "sins" have been forgiven. And so the oppressive feelings of guilt are removed. Holy Communion has thus an outstanding divine purpose as a help for the human being who is depressed or dejected by sin or feelings of guilt.
