26.3  The animals have to live in the zone of the killing principle
What is it then that still prevents mankind from being a society of true happiness and light? It is of course the animal side in the human being. The animal's law of life is every one for itself. In the kingdom of the animals every living being, by means of an automatic or instinctive drive for self-preservation, has to look after itself alone, if it is to reckon on existing at all. Through cunning, force or camouflage it has to try to meet its own vital needs. Indeed, animal food is still a vital necessity for many beings; they must therefore kill those animals whose organisms they must consume as food, just as they are also subjected to life-threatening rivals for the same food. They have thus no safety other than that which they can create through power and strength, cunning or camouflage. With these characteristics they must also try to protect their offspring, which are also sought after by other animals for the satiation of their hunger. It is thus a matter of course that the killing principle is a vital necessity for these beings.
