22.10  But even if millions of people in our time move closer and closer to materialism there are as yet many people who still believe in higher powers, in providence or in the Godhead. But belief is not knowledge. It is not maintained by intelligence or fact but exclusively by the religious instinct of these beings, which in turn stimulates the ability to believe in authorities, in this case the world redeemer, as well as the ecclesiastical and other religious authorities. But with the development of the faculty of intelligence the human being begins to be able to analyse for itself and therefore experience facts personally. Since in this way it can for the moment see or observe only physical facts, but cannot experience and understand spiritual or cosmic facts, it is bound to become a materialist. And since its religious instinct has degenerated it is bound to become an atheist too. Thus we see here that it is a quite natural and unavoidable thing for the human being at a certain stage in evolution to become a materialist. So one has no right to be critical or intolerant in any way towards the materialistic or atheistic human being.
