The Forgiveness of Sins
Symbol no. 20
20.1  The development of the faculty of humaneness
In symbol no. 19 we explained how the living being's conduct is the cause of its fate, and that this fate will be light or dark, happy or unhappy depending on whether one's conduct creates light or darkness, happiness or unhappiness for other living beings. This principle determines the development of a faculty that results in one becoming increasingly unable to find it in one's heart to hurt other living beings or to inflict suffering of any kind whatsoever upon them. We know this faculty as the faculty of humaneness, which in turn is the same as the beginnings of neighbourly love. The development of this faculty means therefore the liberation of the being from all so-called "evil", and liberation from all suffering or unhappy fates. Without the development of this faculty no human being whatsoever would ever become humane or loving. It is this faculty that forms the foundation of the keynote of the universe, which is love.
