Livets Bog, vol. 3
How "movement" becomes a "sign of life". Life is simply a juggling with impressions and expressions
822. But these "life substances" could never have existed or have come about if they had not simultaneously been impressed with the stamp of an I. The impressing of "movement" by this stamp of an I in turn renders it identical to or transforms it into a "sign of life". So how is this "stamp" impressed on the "movement"? We have already touched on this issue earlier. This "stamping" of the "movement" is in fact the same as the "turning" or "rotation" of the "movement" that always, without exception, takes place when the latter meets or comes into contact with the I. It is this "turning process" that transforms all "impressions" into "expressions". "Impressions" are the experience of the inward movement of the energies into the consciousness, whereas "expressions" are the outward movement of the energies away from the consciousness, which also confirms to the highest degree the identity of movement as "life". Without "impressions" and "expressions" there would in reality exist no life. For what is life but a juggling with "impressions" and "expressions"?
