681. Following this, the speech of life has also long since proved it to be an irrefutable fact that this "something" (the universe) consists of "cause" and "effect". This is given expression in star field no. 2. Here we can see, as if in a vision, a figure that appears with contractions and expansions. The points of contraction are expressions of "causes", while the expansions are expressions of the "effects" brought about by the "causes". The figure is therefore intended to show that "cause" becomes "effect" and this in turn becomes a "cause", which once again becomes a new "effect" and so on into infinity. Everything that is directly accessible to sensory perception constitutes collectively an all-embracing "principle of cause and effect". This is, as we have said, the second basic answer to the mystery.
