Morality and science are the same in principle. Morality is a guide in overcoming "thought-climates" in the same way as science is a guide in overcoming the physical elements or climates.
444. These counter-measures are all, without exception, practised under the ordinary concept of "morality". "Morality" is thus the beginning guide-line in controlling thought-climates in the same way as "science" is the beginning guide-line in controlling physical "climates". So in principle "morality" is the same with regard to the creation of thought, as "science" is with regard to physical creation.
However, if science and morality are the same in principle, why are these two phenomena expressed by different names? The reason is, of course, that these phenomena, although constituting the same principle, differ greatly in their purely outward appearance. Consequently they are also regarded as two absolutely unconnected factors. The reason for the difference between these phenomena is entirely a question of development. As previously mentioned, science is the guide-line into the recognition of the true nature of physical climates or the cause of outer phenomena, while morality is the guide-line to the recognition of the truth within "thought-climates", that is to say the inner mental currents and ideas promoted by the will. Of these two concepts, science and morality, the latter is the oldest and the most fundamental – and is in eternal continuance. It is present in the living being in all possible circumstances, regardless of whether that individual is aware of it or not.
