Livets Bog, vol. 1
Dissimilarity between living beings on the same step in evolution exists only in form, not in morality. Moral standard is measured according to the living beings' ability to love each other
279. It is on symbol No. 8 we are shown "Life's Road". To climb each single step is common to all existing living beings. However, the way in which each step is climbed cannot be the same for all, for there is no limit to the many variations in which that passage takes place. This means that on one and the same step in evolution there exists a multiple variety of life forms. But the deviation of these living beings one from another will exist only in form, not in morality. All of them together on the same step will, in their manifestations, be at exactly the same moral standard. So in the terrestrial zones the moral standard will be measured by human beings' ability to love each other. The more prominent this ability is in a normal person in the zone of the Earth the higher the step in evolution on which he finds himself at present.
It is the moral standard which constitutes the fundamental yardstick for the limitation of the character steps - not the particular forms or bodily structures of these beings. These latter realities can be of only secondary importance as they are made up of the individual's special habits and inclinations, and these again are limited by his moral concepts. The moral understanding in the consciousness of that individual will in all circumstances determine his position on the evolutionary ladder or "Life's Road".
