247. Nearly at the top of the vertical white line we see a small white star from which there radiates a yellow ray to the right. This star and its ray express the increase of the religious principle in terrestrial mankind and its worship of God. The increasing width of the beam denotes that from a frail and primitive beginning the religious principle - passing through irrational belief and many different suggested concepts - becomes at last a fundamental factor of life through which terrestrial mankind will evolve until it is possible for it to experience the Great Birth - that is to say, a permanent spiritual day-consciousness. On the symbol the Great Birth is made visible by the star which terminates the yellow ray. The two large white rays which emanate from that star express a transfigured existence or cosmic consciousness which permeates all things. On the right of the white line the animal's evolutionary stages as terrestrial mankind commence. The first, or most primitive, stages are no longer to be found on this Earth but have become extinct long ago and therefore there is a missing link between the most primitive people on Earth at present and the evolutionary stages of the animal. The passage of living beings along this intermediate link cannot therefore take place on this Globe but - according to later analyses - takes place on other globes. From this area the white line along to the orange star at the bottom of the symbol represents human development by divine suggestion, which chiefly indicates the idea of faith without knowledge. Gradually, however, as this star is reached, the human being becomes impervious to suggestion, meaning in this case that within him there begins a condition where he is unable to believe without understanding. It is just here that he starts to acquire the faculty to experience knowledge, because in that zone his body of intelligence is coming into force, and, as mentioned before, on account of that body science is emerging; it is the orange star that represents present-day terrestrial science. As terrestrial science is still working somewhat separately from the body of feeling and for a time the function of intelligence is quite predominant, science becomes materialistic in its nature, that is to say it is able to observe only purely physical areas which are accessible to physical sensing in connection with optical apparatus and other facilities. The terrestrial scientist, therefore, can only observe fellow beings of his own species - that is terrestrial mankind. Furthermore, he can observe animals, plants and the most coarse minerals, also physical matter, rays and wavelengths. It is at this point that his present-day areas of investigation come to a halt, because here he meets the limit of the physical world and therefore further research can proceed only by a different sense dimension, which in this case means one based on exceptional, balanced and harmonized intelligence and feeling. Due to the nature of his investigations the ordinary scientist is as yet only looking backwards - that is to say he sees only those facts which lie behind his own evolution. On the symbol this is expressed by the green ray emanating from the lower orange star which extends back across the animal kingdom and the plant kingdom to the mineral kingdom. Purely intellectual research work, therefore, gives the individual only material and physical knowledge, but as the human beings who have not yet evolved the body of feeling enough are receiving the last forms of suffering through which that body becomes developed and adjusted to harmonize and co-operate with the function of the body of intelligence, so it is here that the faculty of love comes into being. As we already know, this does not mean the faculty of procreation or of falling in love. As the faculty of love gradually develops, the individual's experiences of feeling begin to play a part in the investigations by intelligence and thus science becomes "philosophy". This is shown on the symbol by the yellow-green ray radiating to the right from the lower orange star. Because from a cosmic viewpoint, intelligence and feeling within this zone are still found to be deficient, or at an incomplete stage, all human beings have to fill out the gaps and the unknown areas in their knowledge to a large extent with conjectured details or theories. These again will grow more and more genuine or in harmony with the Truth according to the nearness of the Great Birth. Philosophy then is the commencement of true spiritual science. By slow degrees it brings the collaboration between the individual's bodies of intelligence and feeling to such a harmony that the body of intuition can begin to develop. Through the power of this body the individual's cosmic faculties are developed and the Great Birth will take place. Thereafter he is no longer an animal but a real human being and is able to experience the great cosmic realities and truths as facts, and participate in the "gold copies" - that eternal panorama of memory details in visible form. Human beings of this kind are shown on the symbol in the vertical sections where the lowest part appears yellow. But here we are brought outside the Earth's present area of evolution and are on a plane of existence or a kingdom which is not yet of this world. This is expressed on the symbol by the two orange lines at the top directed outwards from the picture of the Earth. These two lines show the Earth's present cosmic position or relationship to the various planes of existence, each of the latter being depicted by vertical fields of the same colour. Thus on symbol No. 5 we see four planes of existence, constituting, from left to right: the mineral kingdom (indigo), the plant kingdom (red), the animal kingdom (orange), and the real human kingdom (yellow). With regard to the two orange lines just mentioned which express the extent of the range of the Earth's horizon we see how the real human kingdom and real human beings expressed by the yellow areas lie outside this range. We see too that the Great Birth can only be experienced fundamentally outside this Earth, which means only in worlds which are further forward in evolution than our Globe.
