The plant's transition into the animal kingdom. The animal's evolution progressing to the human kingdom. The spiritual bodies and terrestrial mankind's subconsciousness and day-consciousness
185. With regard to an animal, it is a living being which is so far ahead of a plant in evolution that it can experience the pleasant and the unpleasant not merely as vague sensing but also as realistic fact. In reality the pleasant and the unpleasant are respectively the same as happiness and suffering, and so a plant being on its entry to the animal kingdom will for the first time begin to experience happiness and suffering in a conscious or awake state. In that zone it is only on the basis of an interaction between gravity energy and feeling energy that happiness and suffering can be experienced, and so, as those realities are seated in the body of feeling, we see here that the plant's physical body on its entrance into the animal kingdom already appears with a kind of connection to that body of feeling. But this body, which will not support consciousness until the next plane of existence, is naturally present at this point only in quite a weak and embryonic condition. Since it is gravity energy that promotes suffering - in other words, manifestation of the killing principle - and this energy is the dominating one on the physical plane, the animal's actual experience of unpleasantness or suffering is far greater than its experience of pleasantness. But it is through this predominant condition of suffering that the animal develops further. It learns to distinguish between various kinds of suffering and learns to overcome them, acquiring habits and inclinations which gradually become faculties and abilities. It reaches a zone whereby in slow degrees it becomes conscious of its own cries of fear, and so the religious principle comes into being and thereafter the animal makes its appearance as terrestrial man. And so here once again the development of a new embryonic body begins to gather speed. This body is where the living being's communication with the next basic energy - intelligence energy - is seated, through which it gradually acquires the ability to bind and guide gravity energy and feeling energy whereby "love" arises and with it the connecting Great Birth which allows terrestrial mankind's entrance into the real human kingdom. But mankind has not yet reached so far in evolution. It still belongs to the animal kingdom because its body of feeling is not developed fully and the embryo of the body of intelligence is still not manifest enough for these two realities together to be the perfect combination necessary for the body of feeling to bear entirely the fully aware, or awake, day-consciousness; (this is according to later analyses). This again implies that just as the body of gravity for the plant constituted the subconscious and could only support day-consciousness when it was in a certain connection with the embryonic body of feeling, so terrestrial mankind's body of feeling still belongs to its subconscious and can only bear day-consciousness when it has developed enough to reach a connection with the embryonic body of intelligence which is the determining agent for the development of the germ existing behind that same embryo which will lead to yet another embryo. And this is the "embryo of the body of intuition".
Thus the subconscious of terrestrial mankind consists of all three outstanding embryonic bodies at different stages which, as they gradually develop, will extend the individual's day-consciousness to include also their equivalent planes of existence.
