One's practical behaviour as the main factor in influencing one's neighbour
162. An influence of a more fundamental nature than theoretical influence is the effect on other individuals of one's own, practical behaviour. If it gives an expression of tolerance, humanity and gentleness towards all living beings, one becomes a real force in furthering terrestrial mankind's move towards world peace, towards the divine light, towards the real human kingdom; for just as illness may be infectious and thus be spread from individual to individual, so in the same way one's practical life style and behaviour will also be spread around to individuals receptive to that way of life. One's practical behaviour therefore becomes the main factor in the degree of influence one exerts upon one's neighbour, whatever amount of knowledge and wisdom one may possess. As previously mentioned, in no case could this ever be more than a subsidiary factor, so long as one's personal behaviour is not yet manifesting a great deal of tolerance or neighbourly love.
