The Road to Initiation
The article: The Road to Initiation
Chapter 4
The experience of death instead of life
By touching on the application of technical knowledge to war or to serving the killing principle, we do not of course intend to accuse or criticise any particular people or any particular nation. It is only the application of technical knowledge to the service of the killing principle that we want to direct attention to. Besides, one must remember that nothing could in any way be more perfect today than it is. Does one not believe that every party to a case, and thus also to a war, makes the greatest effort to find vent for what they, at the moment, believe and understand to be the absolutely wisest and most perfect for attaining his right or what he thinks is his right? If the opposite were the case he would be abnormal. Everything is thus at the moment the most perfect it can be, because of humanity's past, and because of the plan that God has for the future of humanity. And we have thus to remember that it is humanity's road towards the "gate of wisdom" or "gate of light" that we have before us. And as we have pointed out, this road is richly provided with details. Indeed, was it not simply a whole orgy of extreme contrasts that ended in the most horrible and blood-dripping destinies with war, mutilation, death and ruin? And this is thus the way – not to "hell" – but to the "gate of light". This road is not a dance on roses; it is stony, hard and rough, though it naturally also has its bright sides. One wandered until one's feet were bleeding, one was enveloped in sorrow, pain and suffering, one was filled with hatred, and all this culminated in the poisoning of the sky, the light and the warmth that otherwise, throughout our lives, have given us colour, energy or vitality, so that we could not even direct our dying gaze towards it. And here we came to the capitulation of our self-confidence. Here we discovered the complete worthlessness of electrical switches or of pressing buttons to control the elements. Many discovered that, at least temporarily, this was not "life" but on the contrary "death".
